Digikam segmentation fault fixed in Digikam 1.1.0?

Update: This post now have a step-by-step instruction on how to install the latest Digikam version on Ubuntu 9.10

It seems like 1.1.0 takes care of several bugs that caused the previous version to crash. You may download a .deb package if you are in a hurry. I tried to install it, but unfortunately the package breaks the "Showphoto". Whatever that means. I guess that the Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) package is too different to allow the OS to just upgrade right away. I'll look into this as soon as I have the chance. But I will also look forward to see Ubuntu 10.04, and hope that the new Digikam version is included in the repositories.

If you are like me, you have far too many tagged photos to just clean out the old Digikam and install the new .deb package. But thats also an option..

Please reply if you have:

  • Managed to upgrade with .deb package
  • Managed to upgrade with other packages
  • Managed to upgrade with added repository
  • Successfully backed up the old database and made a new clean 1.1.0 install and successfully imported the old database

Update

Theres now a package to install Digikam 1.1.0. This works for Ubuntu 9.10. Do like this:

  1. In a terminal window, do: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fboucault/ppa
  2. Open up sources.list for editing: sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
  3. Add the lines:
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/fboucault/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
    deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/fboucault/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
  4. In terminal, run: sudo apt-get update
  5. Now, if you go to System>Administration>Update manager, you'll see (maybe you need an extra update here)

  6. Install the new packages from the update manager
  7. Start Digikam and go to Help>About Digikam to verify version

(I have also verified that my old database is intact)

  8. You're done! I'll give a brief report later on, to let you know if the segmentation fault crashes have disappeared.

See you later!
